Understanding what a stroke is

A stroke is an emergency that requires an immediate visit to the nearest emergency room (ER). A stroke occurs when there is a disruption in blood flow, causing a reduced supply of oxygen to the brain. There are two main types of stroke:

Ischemic stroke

An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot keeps blood from flowing to the brain. The cause of the blood clot is often a result of a buildup of fatty deposits on the inner lining of a blood vessel. Clots can also travel to the brain from another part of the body.

Hemorrhagic stroke

A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel ruptures. The rupture is commonly caused by hypertension (high blood pressure). After the rupture, blood leaks into the brain, damaging it.
