Television And Telephone

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, like other hospitals, must follow Medicare rules established by the federal government. All Doctors Hospital of Sarasota patients receive COMPLIMENTARY telephone and television service. We also offer patient education programs through our in-house T.V. system. For more information, please ask your nurse.

Permission To Treat

Consent for treatment and operations must be signed by each patient, designated health care surrogate or next of kin. Consent for minors must be signed by parents or guardians.

Medications And Electrical Appliances From Home

Please DO NOT bring medications, including non-prescription or over the counter medications, from home to the hospital. DO bring a list of the medications you are taking, the amount and how often you take the medications. If you do bring your medications with you, they will be kept in our pharmacy and returned to you when you leave the hospital. Please be sure to tell your nurses and physician if you have been taking medications recently or if you have any allergies.
To insure a safe medical environment for all our patients, please do not bring electrical appliances from home, such as hair dryers, hot curlers, radios, tape recorders, video cameras and computers.

Financial Arrangements

Representatives from our business office will be happy to answer questions you may have about your bill. They will also help bill your insurance company. However, remember that your insurance company's only obligation is to you, the policyholder, not to the hospital. Therefore, you are ultimately responsible for your hospital bill.
If you do not have insurance coverage or carry an individual policy, you will be asked to make a deposit upon admission. All patients not having full coverage will be advised by our financial representative of the estimated amount their insurance will pay. All estimates are made in good faith however, if circumstances of your care change and you are provided additional treatment which was not anticipated at the time of the estimate, your final bill may be quite different than the original estimate.
Prompt payment holds down the cost of hospital care and is due prior to or at the time of your discharge. There is a financial counselor available in the business office to assist you.

Separate Billings By Physicians

If you require services of a radiologist, pathologist, anesthesiologist, emergency physician, surgeon or cardiologist for interpretation of tests, their bills will be submitted to you separately and payment should be made directly to their office address. If you are admitted through the Emergency Department by the Emergency Department physician, there will be a separate charge from that physician.

Questions About Medicare Coverage

If you are a Medicare patient, we suggest you contact the Medicare clerk in our business office if you have questions regarding coverage or deductible amounts.

Bedside Information

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota is designed in a contemporary style. All patient rooms are neatly decorated and include a color television.
The patient beds on regular nursing units are fully electric and can be raised or lowered with ease by using bedside controls. Siderails are on the beds for safety reasons - never try to lower them or climb over them. Call a nurse if you need help. The nurse call system is located on the siderail of your bed.
Every patient, except those in the Intensive Care Unit, has a telephone. To place a local call, dial "9"' and then dial your number or dial "0" for operator assistance. To place a long distance call, dial "0" for the operator. Your long distance call can be charged to your home telephone or charge card. The Intensive Care Unit nursing staff can assist patients in making telephone calls from the patient bed. Please ask the ICU nursing staff for assistance.
At your bedside, within easy reach is a nurse call switch you can use to call for assistance.

About Visiting Patients

Having visitors can be a source of comfort for the patient and helps to support them in their treatment and recovery, therefore open visitation will be allowed for those identified by the patient. Rest and quiet, however, are an important part of a patient's therapy. We therefore ask that visitors observe a few necessary guidelines:

  • Please use the front entrance to the hospital when possible. After 8:00pm, the front doors will be locked. At that time, please enter through the Emergency Room entrance.
  • Please speak in quiet tones and be considerate of other patients.
  • Visitors and patients are not permitted to smoke within the hospital.
  • Visitors may be asked to leave under the following circumstances
    • At the patient’s request
    • A procedure is being performed
    • The visitor is loud, disruptive or causing the patient to become agitated
    • There is suspicion that illicit drugs or paraphernalia is being provided to the patient
    • Visitation is not in the best interest of the patient
    • Please keep in mind that for safety reasons, patients are required to stay on their respective unit.

Gift Shop

Open Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm and Saturday & Sunday from 10:00 am -2:00 pm.

The hospital gift shop is run by the Auxiliary of Doctors Hospital. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund, which awards scholarships to high school seniors entering the healthcare field.

Can't bring it yourself?  Have it Delivered!

The gift shops sells flowers, candy and balloons that can be delivered to the patient’s room. Simply call 941-342-1005 and a volunteer will assist you.  All major credit cards are accepted.

Going Home

Discharge from the Hospital:

Before you go home, your physician must write a discharge order on your chart.
Before leaving the hospital, you or a relative should check at the nurses desk for prescriptions or special instructions from your physician. When you are ready and dressed for discharge, notify your nurse. At this time, you will begin the release process to be discharged from Doctors Hospital of Sarasota.
As soon as you are notified of your discharge, you should make arrangements to vacate your room.

Your Discharge Checklist:

  • Have you checked in the closet, around the room and in the bedside furniture for personal items?
  • Have you withdrawn personal items deposited for you in the hospital safe?
  • Have you withdrawn medications brought with you to the hospital from the pharmacy?

Delayed Charges

It sometimes takes as long as 23 hours for a charge slip from a department in the hospital to be recorded on your bill in the business office. Charges for treatments or prescriptions ordered during the 23 hour period prior to your discharge may not be included in your bill at the time of your discharge. A detailed bill of your entire stay, including delayed charges, will be mailed to you after discharge.

Food and Nutrition Services

The Food and Nutrition Services Department of Doctors Hospital of Sarasota provides appetizing, healthy meals and snacks based on your physician's diet order. An attractive menu is posted on the bulletin board in your room. In addition, you will also receive a menu ticket on your breakfast tray so that you may select your beverage and food preference choices. A representative will visit you to take your menu ticket and any individualized food preferences or needs you may have. If you do not like the main feature for a particular meal, you may select from a wide variety of alternatives from our a la carte menu.

A guest tray service is also available. If you would like to request a guest tray, simply alert the nursing or dietary staff. We encourage guests to use the Lido cafeteria on the first floor for a wide selection of foods, including a gill (available during lunch service), full salad bar and hot food bar.

The Lido Cafeteria is open for service during the following times:

Breakfast: 6:50 - 9:30 a.m.
Lunch: 11:15 - 1:30 p.m.
Dinner: Closed

The cafeteria is closed for breakfast on weekends, but vending machines are available for specialty coffees and snacks.

Valuables Notification

It is the full responsibility of all patients to personally safeguard their valuables and belongings while a patient at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota.
Patient valuables may be placed in the hospital safe for protection, but it is HIGHLY recommended that valuables be left at home prior to admission. Doctors Hospital of Sarasota does not accept responsibility for any lost, stolen or damaged items that a patient has retained in their possession. This includes dentures, hearing aides, glasses, contact lenses, jewelry, money or any other personal items.

Advance Directives

Information for Patients and Their Families About Advance Directives for Medical Care.

The Patient Self Determination Act of 1990 requires that a hospital advise you, upon admission, of your right to refuse or select treatment under state law. At the time of admission or registration, it is also important for us to determine if you have executed any advance directives. Many people have become aware that medical technology, a patient can be kept alive for an extended period of time - even when there is no chance for improvement in the patient's condition. For many, this is an issue of great concern. A frequently asked question is, "How can I be sure this does not happen to me?" Under Florida law, a competent person over 18 has the right to make decisions concerning her/his medical treatment. The law also allows for your rights and personal wishes to be respected even if you are too sick to make decisions for yourself. It is the policy of Doctors Hospital of Sarasota to recognize your right to accept or reject medical treatment, including whether to continue medical treatment that would prolong your life or the dying process artificially. The hospital will ask you or your surrogate to sign an acknowledgment statement certifying that you have been given this information. At the bottom of the statement is a section which requires you or your surrogate's signature informing the hospital whether you have or have not executed an advance directive. Federal law requires that the hospital obtain this information. This acknowledgment statement will be made a part of your medical record. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE AN ADVANCE DIRECTIVE TO RECEIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT. It is the policy of Doctors Hospital of Sarasota that no patient will be discriminated against on the basis of whether that patient has or has not completed an advance directive. Also, a mentally competent patient can revoke or change an advance directive at any time. Doctors Hospital of Sarasota has established policies to ensure that your rights to refuse or accept medical treatment under the laws of the State of Florida are protected. (Should you request additional information, a hospital representative will be made available to explain the hospital's policy.)

These policies are summarized as follows:

Informed Consent:

  • States the hospital's recognition of a patient's right to designate a health care surrogate, to establish a guardian or durable power of attorney.
  • States a patient's right to reasonable informed participation in decisions regarding her or his health care.
  • Specifies those procedures which require the completion of written consent forms.
  • Provides guidance for the treatment of minor and incapacitated patients and the handling of consent issues in medical emergencies.

Refusal To Consent/Lack Of Informed Consent:

  • States a patient's and their surrogate's right to refuse to consent to medical procedures.
  • Provides guidance for the refusal of treatment for minors and incapacitated patients.

Withholding Or Withdrawing Of Life-Prolonging Procedures:

  • States procedures for competent adults who have been certified as having a terminal condition by their attending physician and one other consulting physician to direct the withdrawal or withholding of procedures that would serve only to artificially prolong her/his dying.
  • States the patient's right to execute an advance directive and the hospital's policy to follow the wishes expressed in such a document as defined in the State of Florida Health Care Advance Directives Act.

Conflict Resolution: Admission, Treatment And Discharge:

  • Establishes a mechanism for reviewing and evaluating the needs and wishes of the neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and those of their family or legal surrogate regarding the patient's care. It establishes a method for resolving conflicts and defining the final authority for addressing admission, treatment and discharge issues, including conflicts related to the decision to withhold resuscitative services.

A Patient's Rights

As a patient at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, you have certain rights and responsibilities. We feel that if you understand them, you can contribute to the effectiveness of your treatment and to the quality of patient care. We have included a list that reflects our concern for you as a patient and a human being.

1. Access to Care
Individuals shall be accorded impartial access to treatment or accommodations that are available or medically indicated, regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin or sources of payment for care.
2. Respect and Dignity
The patient has the right to considerate, respectful care at all times and under all circumstances, with recognition of her or his personal dignity.
2. Privacy and Confidentiality
The patient has the right, within the law, to personal informational privacy, as manifested by the following rights:
a.To refuse to talk with or see anyone not officially connected with the hospital, including visitors or persons officially connected with the hospital but not directly involved in her or his care.
b.To wear appropriate personal clothing and religious or other symbolic items, as long as they do not interfere with diagnostic procedures or treatment.
c.To be interviewed and examined in surroundings designed to assure reasonable visual and auditory privacy. This includes the right to have a person of one's own sex present during certain parts of a physical examination, treatment or procedure performed by a health professional of the opposite sex and the right not to remain disrobed any longer than is required for accomplishing the medical purpose for which the patient was asked to disrobe.
d.To expect that any discussion or consultation involving her or his care will be conducted discreetly and that individuals not directly involved in her or his care will not be present without her or his permission.
e.To have her or his medical record read only by individuals directly involved in her or his treatment or the monitoring of its quality. Other individuals can read her or his medical record only on her or his written authorization or that of her or his legally authorized representative.
f.To expect all communications and other records pertaining to her or his care, including the source of payment for treatment, to be treated as confidential.
g.To request a transfer to another room if another patient or a visitor in the room is unreasonably disturbing her or him.
h.To be placed in protective privacy when considered necessary for personal safety.
3. Personal Safety
The patient has the right to expect reasonable safety insofar as the hospital practices and environment are concerned.
5. Identity
The patient has the right to know the identity and professional status of individuals providing service to her or him and to know which physician or other practitioner is primarily responsible for her or his care. This includes the patient's right to know of the existence of any professional relationship among individuals who are treating her or him, as well as the relationship to any other health care or educational institutions involved in her or his care. Participation by patients in clinical training programs or in the gathering of data for research should be voluntary.
6. Information
The patient has the right to obtain from the practitioner who is responsible for coordinating her or his care, complete and current information concerning her or his diagnosis (to the degree known), treatment and any known prognosis. This information should be communicated in terms the patient can reasonably be expected to understand. When it is not medically advisable to give such information to the patient, the information should be made available to a legally authorized individual.
7. Communication
The patient has the right of access to people outside the hospital by means of visitors and by verbal and written communication.
When the patient does not speak or understand the predominant language of the community, she or he should have access to an interpreter. This is particularly true where language barriers are a continuing problem.
8. Consent
The patient has the right to reasonable, informed participation in decisions involving her or his health care. To the degree possible, this should be based on a clear, concise explanation of her or his condition and of all proposed technical procedures, including the possibilities of any risk or mortality or serious side effects, problems related to recuperation, and probability of success. The patient should not be subjected to any procedure without her or his voluntary, competent, and understanding consent or the consent of her or his legally authorized representative. Where medically significant alternatives for care or treatment exist, the patient shall be so informed.
The patient has the right to know who is responsible for authorizing and performing the procedures or treatment.
The patient shall be informed if the hospital proposes to engage in or perform human experimentation or other research/educational projects affecting her or his care or treatment, and the patient has the right to refuse to participate in any such activity.
9. Consultation
The patient, at her or his own request and expense, has the right to consult with a specialist.
10. Refusal of Treatment
The patient may refuse treatment to the extent permitted by law. When refusal of treatment by the patient or her or his legally authorized representative prevents the provision of appropriate care in accordance with professional standards, the relationship with the patient may be terminated upon reasonable notice.
11. Transfer and Continuity of Care
A patient may not be transferred to another facility or organization unless she or he has received a complete explanation of the need for the transfer and unless the transfer is acceptable to the other facility or organization. The patient has the right to be informed by the practitioner responsible for her or his care, or her or his delegate, of any continuing health care requirements following discharge from the hospital.
12. Hospital Charges
Regardless of the source of payment for her or his care, the patient has the right to request and receive an itemized and detailed explanation of her or his total bill for services rendered in the hospital. The patient has the right to timely notice prior to termination of her or his eligibility for reimbursement by any third-party payor for the cost of her or his care.
13. Hospital Rules and Regulations
The patient should be informed of the hospital rules and regulations applicable to her or his conduct as a patient. Patients are entitled to information about the hospital's mechanism for the initiation, review and resolution of patient complaints.
14. Chaplaincy Program

As part of the hospital's responsibility to provide for the patient's spiritual as well as physical needs, a chaplaincy program has been created for our patients and their families that includes a hospital chapel, minister visitation program, and the establishment of a clergy office for managing this patient service.

Patient Responsibility

A patient has the responsibility to provide, to the best of her or his knowledge, accurate and complete information about current complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and other matters relating to her or his health. She or he has the responsibility to report unexpected changes in her or his condition to the responsible practitioner. A patient is responsible for reporting whether she or he clearly comprehends a contemplated course of action and what is expected of her or him.
- Compliance With Instructions -
A patient is responsible for following the treatment plan recommended by the practitioner primarily responsible for her or his care. This may include following the instructions of nurses and allied health personnel as they carry out the coordinated plan of care, implement the responsible practitioner's orders, and enforce the applicable hospital rules and regulations. The patient is responsible for keeping appointments and when she or he is unable to do so for any reason, for notifying the responsible practitioner or the hospital.
- Refusal Of Treatment -
The patient is responsible for her or his actions if she or he refuses treatment or does not follow the practitioner's instructions.
- Hospital Charges -
The patient is responsible for assuring that the financial obligations of her or his health care are fulfilled as promptly as possible.
- Hospital Rules And Regulations -
The patient is responsible for following hospital rules and regulations affecting patient care and conduct.

Respect And Consideration

The patient is responsible for being considerate of the rights of other patients and hospital personnel, for cooperating with the hospital's no smoking policy, and restricting the number of your visitors. The patient is responsible for being respectful of the property of other persons and of the hospital.

What Patients and Guests Should Know About Isolation

What is Isolation?
Isolation is a special infection control procedure used to stop germs from spreading. Sometimes, a patient may have an illness (i.e. tuberculosis) that requires an extra effort to protect visitors, other patients, and hospital staff. That patient must be isolated or separated from others.

When is isolation necessary?
When a patient has an infectious disease, or when an infectious disease is suspected.

How long does isolation last?
The length of time is up to the physician, but it usually lasts until the patient can no longer pass the infection onto others.

What kind of isolation will be needed?
The kind of isolation depends on the way in which the germ can be spread to others:

  • Airborne Isolation - Is used when the germs spread through the air and travel long distances, like tuberculosis. A room with special ventilation is required. Visitors must wear a mask in the patient's room.
  • Droplet Isolation - Is used when the germs spread through the air but can only travel short distances. Visitors must wear a mask in the patient's room.
  • Contact Isolation - Is used when a patient has germs that can be easily spread by skin-to-skin contact, contact with the patient's secretions, or contact with items in the patient's room. Visitors may be asked to wear gloves and a gown.

What kind of room is used for isolation?

  • A private room
  • A semiprivate room (if another person has a similar condition or if there is no danger that the two patients will infect each other)
  • A room with special ventilation

How do you know if a room is an isolation room?

An isolation room has a sign on the door that says what kind of isolation it is and what protective equipment should be used. Protective equipment should be located just outside the door for visitors and health care workers.

What else is important to know?

  • Patients should not leave the room without permission.
  • Health care workers should inform patients and visitors about isolation and the special care they need to take.
  • Visitors should understand isolation procedures to protect themselves and others. They need a nurse's permission to take anything, including food, into or out of a patient's room.
  • Gowns, gloves and masks worn in a patient's room should be thrown away inside the room before leaving. EXCEPTION: Masks must be worn until out of the room for Airborne Isolation.
  • Patients in isolation may have books and magazines, receive and send mail, use the phone and receive visitors.
    If you have any questions, please ask your doctor or nurse or call the Infection Control Department at extension 2225.
